Meet Sensei Beverly Bradley!

She’s a personal trainer, martial artist, and a dedicated humanitarian with a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and self-defense training in Sanuces Ryu. In 2000, she founded ‘Kamili Afya,’ meaning ‘complete health,’ a fitness organization for women in her Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn community, focusing on nutrition, exercise, and overall well-being.

In 2004 the abduction of Carlie Brucia, an 11-year-old girl in Florida, was highlighted by constant surveillance footage which was new back then. Seeing this young girl being led away with such a simple grip deeply disturbed Sensei Bradley. Carlie was later found raped and murdered. This prompted the sensei to advocate for avoidance, awareness and self-defense education for women and children, and the idea to create a SuperShero that would educate people globally.

She also volunteered teaching self-defense at schools throughout the 5 boroughs of New York and was nominated for a Liberty Medal Award in leadership. The New York Post named her “The Crusader for Self-Defense! Sensei Bradley also volunteered at schools, and clinics in Liberia, West Africa through Imani House Inc. Sensei’s efforts gained attention, she was even on the cover of “The Brooklyn Paper”!

Bradley expanded her organization and changed the name to “Underground Physique”! She shifted the focus to women and children, and combines fitness, health, and a deep focus in self-defense to this day.

She also earned an MS in Health Communication for Social Change from CUNY Graduate School of Public Health & Health Policy to further her expertise. A personal trainer, martial artist, and humanitarian with a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and advanced training in Sanuces Ryu. In 2000, she founded Kamili Afya (“complete health”), a women’s fitness organization serving her Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn community with a focus on nutrition, fitness, and total well-being.

In 2004, the abduction of 11-year-old Carlie Brucia deeply impacted her. The widely broadcast surveillance footage—still a relatively new phenomenon at the time—showed the young girl being led away with a simple yet controlling grip. The tragedy, which
ended in Carlie’s sexual assault and murder, profoundly disturbed Sensei Bradley. She felt if the girl knew some self-defense like raising her voice or a quick way to get out of the grip, it may have saved her life. This tragedy became a turning point.

She volunteered teaching self-defense in schools across New York City’s five boroughs, to educate young girls and boys, and was nominated for a Liberty Medal Award in leadership by the New York Post.
